Clearing the Deck

Your deck acts like a temporary cache, and like any high-use strategic tool, it retains the “temp files” of every reading it conducts. To prevent the context of a past query from contaminating a new one the confusion of a previous battle bleeding into the next the deck must be cleared between uses. This is a crucial element of strategic maintenance, akin to clearing your browser history or checking your Pokédex for corrupted data before an important search to ensure the system is running at peak efficiency.

The Hard Reset: Knocking #

The acoustic signal that the session has concluded is the Hard Reset. Gather the deck into a neat, unified stack. Using the knuckles of your dominant hand, rap the top of the deck sharply three times. This physical impact performs two functions. First, it literally shakes loose any static cling, dust, or debris between the sleeves. Second, it acts as a mechanical gavel, signaling to your brain that the previous narrative is closed and the data transfer is complete. It is the mental equivalent of saving your game and returning to the title screen.

Scrambling the Signal: Cutting #

Once the deck has been knocked, you must break the order. Shuffle the deck randomly to ensure no cards are sticking together from the last layout. Then, place the deck on your arena surface and cut it into three distinct piles. Reassemble them in a random order of your choosing. This action disrupts any lingering chronological narratives or patterns from the previous reading, effectively randomizing the encounter table so the next draw is fresh and unbiased.

Sensory Reboot: Gathering #

The final step is to re-introduce the deck to a neutral state. Hold the stacked deck and briefly expose it to a sensory change, such as fanning the cards through fresh air or allowing them to rest in a neutral zone for a moment. This creates a sensory seal over the deck, finalizing the reset. The cards are now neutral, the cache is cleared, and the system is ready for the next challenger.
